Jesus reminded us of the blessings that come with being generous and wide reaching when it comes to inviting and welcoming people.
The winter season brings lots of opportunities for individuals and churches to invite their older neighbours. Christmas and Easter are the obvious ones, but there are other winter warming welcomes too.
Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.
Luke 14:12-14
Did you know that 35% of over 65 year old non-church-goers told Bible Society researchers that if a friend invited them to Church they'd say 'yes'? Some churches print special invitation cards for members to share with neighbours. If yours doesn't, why not send a Christmas card and include your own invitation?
Inviting your older neighbours for a cup of tea and mince pie or other seasonal treat is a lovely way for all involved to spend a wintery morning or an afternoon. Invite them to your home or offer to take them to a local cafe or garden center.
Our CEO, Alexandra, has regularly enjoyed a cosy December afternoon in her home with her 3 older neighbours. Serving simple mulled wine and mince pies, she says, "It's always such a jolly afternoon, and everyone really appreciates it, including me!".
