As set out in our basis of faith, we hold to the divine inspiration and authority of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, which are the written Word of God - fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.
At Faith in Later Life, we inspire and equip churches to reach, disciple and mobilise older people. We believe this mission is firmly rooted in Scripture.
The gospel reminds us that because of Adam’s disobedience in Eden, sin entered the world, separating us from God and bringing death (Genesis 3). But out of His love, God provided a remedy, the sacrifice of Jesus, who paid the price for our sin. Now everyone who trusts in Jesus receives the greatest gift - complete forgiveness, friendship with Jesus, and eternal life (John 3:16).
The Bible is clear that God wants everyone to have the opportunity to trust in Jesus (2 Peter 3:9), experience the joy of the Holy Spirit here and now (Ephesians 5:18), and be with Him in heaven when they die (1 Timothy 2:4). This is for their eternal salvation and to the glory of God.
Christians are called to share this good news with those who don’t yet know Him (Matthew 28: 19-20). At Faith in Later Life, we believe that this call is especially urgent for those who are nearing the end of life, most often older people. This can be a complex ministry as we will often have to help people to navigate deeply rooted misgivings and misunderstandings they may have about God, His word, and His people.
From the moment that we put our trust in Jesus, we are called to become more like Him (Romans 8:29) for the rest of our lives (Philippians 1:6). Older Christians have a unique calling to model godly maturity, encourage the next generation (Titus 2:2–5), and keep proclaiming God’s goodness (Psalm 92: 12-15). But they can only do this well by staying close to Jesus themselves.
Growing older often brings challenges - declining health, unwanted life changes, and even a sense of having no clear role in the church. These can make it harder for some to stay intentional in their walk with Jesus, and the zeal they once had can diminish.
At Faith in Later Life, we believe that inspiring and equipping older Christians to continue walking with and getting to know Jesus, through and beyond hardships, and even experience personal revival is essential for their flourishing and for God’s mission. It will also prepare us to face life’s hardest seasons, especially when we can no longer engage in the spiritual practices we’ve long relied on to keep us close to Him.
When God was ready to share the message of Jesus’ birth with all those who had been waiting for the arrival of the Messiah, He appointed Anna and Simeon, two very old people to proclaim his news (Luke 2).
God’s call to make disciples has no ‘use by’ date, the great commission is lifelong. The Bible shows that older believers have a vital role in teaching, mentoring, and modelling faith for the next generation (Titus 2:2–5; Psalm 78:4), and promises that even in later life they will continue to be fruitful (Psalm 92:14).
At Faith in Later Life, we consider how churches can inspire and mobilise older people to continue to join in with God’s disciple making mission through their changing circumstances and abilities. This includes encouraging and equipping them to share Jesus in the unique places and situations they may find themselves in towards the end of their lives.
This short video brings together scriptural passages that speak about older age, helping us reflect on God’s heart for older people and the fruitful, vital part older believers play in His church.
The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, ‘The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.’
